Hello to all, the Victoria Regional tournament did not recover from the Canadian Regional held at the Esquimalt arena(talk about a bad venue) a number of years ago, that tournament drove a lot of our out of town customers away was my conclusion.
We asked for feedback at the 2011 Regional and recieved it. Pearkes is not ideal and with limited options the choice was made, it does deal with the 2011 feedback received and solves some of those issues.
I agree it is not an “exciting” new venue .

Just noticed that the next Mentor Game is Sunday May 6. Unfortunately, the Qualicum Sectional is May 4-6; I had made a commitment for those dates, so would be unavailable for the MG. A suggestion: perhaps the May Mentor game could be moved to a different Sunday? I suspect this conflict may affect other mentors.

For any visitors from USA or further they will have to rent car – many will find
this expense too much – has anyone thought of renting a bus and have one or’
two pick up/return points in downtown Victoria for those not local ???? And
supply a list of close restaurants. This might make the Pearkes Arena more
palatable for some to come. Tks Deanna

Please read the e-mail I have sent Sandra Fraser re: the Victoria Regional 2013.
I would like to add that all the hotels we did contact were so helpful and wanted desperately to host our tournament. But, there just was not enough space. We need an area of 10,000 square feet to accommodate an event of this size.

Hi Sandra,
In reply to your e-mail re: the 2013 Victoria Regional.
There are not many restaurants in the nearby area, I agree with you.
The Gorge area is nearby with many accommodaation sites. Plus, Pearkes is only a 15-20 minute drive from downtown Victoria.
The reasons that Pearkes has been selected are:
Free parking. Many Victoria players refused to attend the 2011 Regional because of the high parking costs.
To rent the Crystal Gardens cost $35,000 for the week. Pearkes willl cost $8,000.
The Empress Hotel has exclusive rights to the concession in the Crystal Gardens. Their fee is $300.00 per hour. Yes, you read that correctly. Minus whatever their sales were, but we still had to pay the difference.
The D19 Board cannot afford to host a Regional Tournament that will lose at least $10,000 each year. The primary reason that a Regional is held in Victoria every 2 years is to encourage the Vancouver Island players to attend a tournament in their own area without having to incur major travelling expenses.
We checked out several different faclities in downtown Victoria, but none was large enough to host such an event. The Victoria Regional attendance has been dropping every year for the last 3 tournaments. We needed to move on.
The D19 Board was unanimous in deciding to try Pearkes.

Are there no other facilities in the city of Victoria? Realize Convention Center is pricey, but are there rooms in 2 Victoria hotels that could provide both accommodation and convention rooms?
