Whistler Regional uncertain

As you know, the Whistler Regional is scheduled for November 1 to 7.

However, this is dependent on BC moving to step 4 of its Covid Recovery Plan, which would allow large indoors gatherings. Due to the recent surge in Covid cases, the province remains at step 3 for the foreseeable future.

BC Public Health officials hope that as more people get immunized to meet the BC vaccine card requirements, restrictions can be lifted.

Given the uncertainty, D19’s Board of Directors will make a final decision on whether to hold the tournament on October 1st. District players will be informed through email and a notice will be posted on our website.

Implications for hotel and accommodations reservations:

If you have booked a room at Chateau Whistler, hang tight. Your credit card will not be charged until mid October. It’s an awesome rate and you might want to consider keeping some or all of your days for a getaway. even if the event is cancelled.

If you have booked other accommodations (Airbnb, etc), check their cancellation policy.

Whistler Regional is on for 2021!

The Whistler Regional will be held this year, from November 1 to 7.

Currently, details are scarce, but check this space often as we will be posting them as soon as they are available.
Here is what we know at this point:
  • The flyer is currently in preparation.
  • The tournament will be held at the Chateau Whistler.
  • Rooms are available from $148 Cdn+ tax.
  • Free parking to bookings by Oct 15.
  • Hotel cancellation-no penalty 14 nights prior-1 night for anything after check in. After check in penalty waived for family emergencies etc.
  • Free bottled water for all.
  • If the US/Canada border is closed or there are virus issues, there will be no penalties for cancellation.

D19 Regionals cancelled until fall 2021

The following District 19 Regional Tournaments have been cancelled for 2021: Victoria (originally scheduled for April), Penticton (June) and Lynwood (August).

Whistler  is still in the cards, so to speak, and could be held at the end of October or the beginning of November. A final decision will be made by D19’s Board  no later than the end of May.

ACBL extends face-to-face tournament cancellations through April 30, 2021

Here’s ACBL Executive Director Joseph Jones’s full text:

Due to the ongoing risk posed by the surging coronavirus and the slow rollout of the vaccine, the ACBL will not staff face-to-face bridge tournaments through April 30, 2021.

This means all Sectionals and Regionals scheduled during this period have been canceled. Consistent with this decision, the ACBL is also canceling the sanctions for any remaining Non-Life Master Tournaments or other bridge tournaments through the end of April where ACBL Tournament Directors are not technically required.

We will contact you by March 1 if the moratorium will be extended past April 30.

Online events, including Regional-rated tournaments, will continue to be offered along with chances to win gold, silver, red and black masterpoints®. Click here for the 2021 schedule of online events. More details can be found at www.acbl.org/virtual.

Sincerely,
Joseph Jones
